Inner Freedom – Between Buddhism and Psychotherapy
My experience is that personal or spiritual growth does not only happen through meditation and silence, but also requires a confrontation with oneself, one’s views and other people.
We want to create a milieu of familiarity in order to be able to turn to personal experiences and feelings in this context. The content of the topic is an important element. At least equally important, however, is each individual participant and the human interaction with each other. Buddhism and psychotherapy provide the framework and give impulses, but are not the focus of attention.
On one hand we want to cultivate qualities such as presence, inner silence, compassion and clarity together. On the other hand, we will also deal with recognizing and integrating our own shadows. Sometimes we also shed light on problematic aspects of organized spirituality such as the idealization of systems or teachers or the side effects of unfulfillable promises of salvation.
For me, inner freedom means to meet life and events freely and freshly or, to use a concept from Zen, with a beginner’s mind or with non-knowing. To live this freedom consistently requires, in my opinion, no traditional framework, but perhaps some courage.
We begin with a 30-minute guided meditation that leads us to the topic. In this I combine elements of Buddhist meditations with exercises from the therapeutic field.
In the subsequent round, the participants can say something about the current state of mind or express their concerns.
After that, I briefly outline the subject and contrast therapeutic ideas with aspects of Buddhist teaching.
Then the open exchange begins, which lasts for about an hour.
We end with a short silent meditation.
Please notice that the groups are held in german without translation!
In order to create more continuity and familiarity with each other, the group is semi-open: this means that a registration (preferably by email) is necessary. You can also take part in single meetings, as long as you have been there before or we met briefly by phone.
