The Internal Family — Working with Inner Parts
IFS (Internal Family Systems) is a gentle and effective therapeutic method that supports the healing of deep-seated wounds. The focus lies on meeting our inner parts with mindful, loving attention — and working with them in different ways.
Our Parts
In IFS we learn to understand and value all our inner parts as members of an “inner family.” This includes protectors, competent and strong parts, as well as the angry, sad, hurt, or neglected ones.
We get to know these parts, connect with them, and listen to what they have to say. Often, they surprise us with insights we were not aware of before. Each part has its own story and its own function — and each deserves to be heard.
The Self — Our Inner Essence
At the center of IFS stands the Self — our inner essence, unburdened and whole. It is our most powerful resource. From a place of clarity, calm, and compassion, we can meet the different parts of ourselves.
Especially the burdened parts — often childlike aspects that may have been pushed away for a long time — can be seen, understood, relieved, and integrated in this process. For that reason, IFS is often also a journey toward our inner child.
The Protective Parts
A key aspect of IFS work is understanding our protective parts. They may control, block, avoid, or put us under pressure — and sometimes they seem like obstacles. Yet they always serve an important purpose: they try to protect us.
We don’t want to “get rid of” these parts, but rather understand their original intention. Once their protective role is seen and appreciated, they can take on a new and more supportive place within the system. Accepting them is a central step on the way to inner balance.
IFS — A Method of Healing and Integration
IFS offers a mindful and respectful way to access repressed feelings and memories, and to work with them constructively. The process is profound, but always guided by the pace of the Self.
Supplement: The Inner Team (Schulz von Thun)
Depending on your needs, I sometimes integrate the Inner Team model developed by Friedemann Schulz von Thun. In contrast to IFS, the inner parts here are not seen as autonomous personalities, but as metaphors — members of an “inner team.”
Especially in everyday or professional contexts, it can be helpful to rearrange these team members like a sports coach would: flexibly, creatively, and solution-oriented. This often opens up playful new perspectives and surprising aha moments.
